A revamped expunge system has now gone live. Most notably, this changes the system from using the sum of mostly-independent submissions to a system with full petitions that can be voted for or against, and appealed within the system itself instead of relying on "staff" for correcting bad expunges.

With the new system, you need a mod power of 5 to start a new expunge. At this point, depending on the expunge type selected, you have to provide a reason and/or an URL to the gallery that makes the gallery in question expungeable.

Anyone with a mod power of 2 or more can vote for or against an expunge. Providing a comment is now optional.

Votes are still capped to 30 + any specially granted bonuses. When a petition has a total sum of votes of 100 or more, it will enter an "activating" state. If the petition remains in this state for more than 15 minutes (that is, it is not voted below 100 at any point), it will lock in and take effect, causing the gallery to be considered expunged as before.

Completed expunges can now be Appealed; this requires a mod power of 10 or more. Just like with expunges, appeals can be voted for or against, with an optional comment, and the expunge will be revoked if the appeal has 100+ vote power for more than 15 minutes. If the expunged gallery was "deleted" by the uploader while it was expunged, it will be automatically restored upon a successful appeal.

Only vetoers can start new expunges on a gallery that has previously had a successfully appealed expunge. Additionally, only vetoers can start an appeal on expunges that activated more than 7 days ago.

There is also a vote restriction on appeals, where anyone who participated in the original expunge petition cannot vote on them. (You can still create an appeal for an expunge you participated in, if you realize it is wrong.)

The expunge tracker has been updated and now shows both petitions and appeals.

Note that a gallery can now have multiple independent petitions active at the same time. In the event that multiple petitions are "activating" at the same time, the one that entered "activating" first will take effect and the rest will be deleted.

When it comes to toplist points, the total points of a completed (active or revoked) petition are now calculated as such:

- Submitting a VALID expunge: 5 points
- Voting FOR a VALID expunge: 1 point
- Submitting an APPEALED or REJECTED expunge: -25 points
- Voting FOR an APPEALED expunge: -5 points
- Voting AGAINST a REJECTED expunge: 1 point
- Submitting a successful appeal: 5 points
- Voting FOR a successful appeal: 1 point

If you create or vote for an invalid (appealed) expunge but are also the one who created the appeal, it will zero out and give 0 points total.

Voting against petitions or appeals does not grant toplist points as it would incentivize certain bad behavior, though there may be some tweaks to change this in the future (see below).

The new system is far more complex than the old one, so some bugs should be expected. Please report anything you find here.

- Petition expiry has been updated and re-enabled.

- Added two more filters to the expunge tracker tool: "Pending Expunge" and "Pending Appeal"

- Petitions that are about to activate are now listed as "Activating" and displayed with a brighter red.


2020-10-21

- Expunge petitions that are voted below -100 will now enter a "Rejecting" state, where after 15 minutes they will become "Rejected". Rejected petitions have the same effect as Revoked petitions, except that they skip the whole appeal step. Note that this only applies to expunge petitions, not appeals, which are left to expire as before.

- Voting against a petition that becomes Rejected now grants +1 toplist point, while submitting a petition that becomes Rejected has a penalty of -25 points. Voting for a petition that becomes Rejected has no effect.

- Petitions (expunges + appeals) that are in the "Activating" or "Rejecting" countdown state can no longer be unilaterally cancelled by the petition creator.

- Added an explicit message informing users who have submitted a Revoked or Rejected petition that they cannot submit another petition for the gallery. (This applies for vetoers as well.)

- Links in expunge comments are clickable again.


Future improvements:

I'm also planning a new expunge type for invalid updates (i.e. sabotaged galleries, or updates that remove images, or updates that are just for bumping), but as this will have different behavior than other expunges and potentially summon administrative action, it also needs some work.

But yeah, the layout might need some adjusting. The "Front Page", "Terms of Service" and "Advertise" buttons currently overlap with the expunge UI on Safari:

Thanks for your hard work on this, I'm glad there will be more accountability for people voting carelessly on expunges now.

One thing I wanted to clarify - Is there a point at which pending expunges that are voted down considerably (say to -100, -250 or something, idk) will be considered invalid, or will they remain on the tracker for the full 7 days before being deleted?

Definitely nice to have it in the same window!

The layout seems to be a bit odd for some people, as mentioned above, but this is a good change.

The tracker also has some layout issues. Lot of empty space and the same font makes it a bit hard to distinguish.

Have to get used to the new votes being at the bottom as well, but that's fine.

Can confirm. Increasing the bottom margin of #expunge_new>table should fix it.

Veto power should carry over and only vetoers can downvote at full power.

Otherwise I think it looks fine overall at my end? I like the new embedded look and I feel lucky that I did not work on a feature for the old expunge log in my script. Anyway, I can finally update my script now.

I was talking about a system like tagging where normal users can only downvote at half power and only veto powers can downvote at full power. When we discussed this revamp back then, we were skeptical about expunge downvotes, so it may be better to limit it somehow.

Seconding Mayriad's suggestion. Only allowing veto holders to downvote petitions at full power may help to prevent some correct petitions being stuck in the water (e.g. -6 "plz dun expunge fakku works!!!").

My bad, clearly one cup of coffee hasn't done much in the way of waking my brain up this morning.

For now, I personally don't think restricting full power downvotes to veto holders would provide much value. Unlike tagging, expunges have a publicly visible log so there will be some accountability for anyone who wrongfully votes down a petition. Let's give it some time with the current values and see whether any problems come up.

If the expunged gallery was "deleted" by the uploader, it will be restored automatically if the appeal is successful.

Interesting new system. Hopefully, this makes expunging for the right reasons easier.

All I want is for this new system to be more accurate compared to before. Now that expunges can be appealed hopefully "biased" expunges will no longer be a thing.

Expunges could always be 'appealed' by posting them in the forum thread. This just makes it a lot easier and more transparent. Not sure what you mean by biased though, do you have any examples on hand?
