1. Who we are

We are a group of e-hentai.org members who specialize in scanlating ero-doujinshi and ero-manga through the extensive use of the "bounty" system. We have been active since 2011 (our first release was on 2011-11-03), and have completed and released over 200 projects. You can view the complete list of our works on the EHCOVE Releases thread.

We don't share common members with EHT (E-Hentai translation group) that was active from 2007 to 2012, but we like to think we are continuing their traditions as the (second) e-hentai homegrown group.

2. Mission

Our mission is to scanlate material that we like in a friendly, collaborative manner in order to make them more accessible to the rest of the e-hentai.org community.

3. Membership list

This is a bit of a mess. This is not finished. Will update it soon as I review uploads/discussions. And if I forget anyone, that's because of messy prior records, don't be offended just PM me. In fact, if you think you should be in that list and aren't, PM right now.

Help out with editing or translating of one of our bounties. Or offer to proofread one of the scripts posted here, here, or (EHCOVE members - contact we me with links to add here for your threads)

5. How to join

To become part of our growing team as a translator. editor, or proofreader, all you need to do is help us out on at least three releases within three months or less. We're proud of the quality of our releases, so we expect you to show the same level of quality and care in your contributions! Feel free to participate in our discussion thread, where you should post your request to join anyway (it's here), or you may PM me or other members of the team for any questions you may have.

To join as an organizer, we ask that your new projects include an EHCOVE-style credit page, have an [EHCOVE] tag in the name, have reasonable quality standards (i.e. they won't get rants about crappy quality) and that you at least occasionally post in our forums in the Cove. PM me for details / approval.

If you want to join, please post here and list your recent EHCOVE projects, and them PM me so I notice your post more quickly.

6. Benefits of joining

By joining us, not only do you become part of a team with hundreds of releases to its name, but you also get to improve your scanlation skills through the advice and guidance of our other members. It is also an opportunity for you to "give something back" to e-hentai.org as a way of showing thanks.

Members active for over two years without significant break will get a senior label.

You also get access to the EHCOVE forum where we discuss internal organization, and review prospective members (i.e. you ).

7. Member responsibilities

Not much, really. See what is expected of a member below. And don't be a dick.

Oh. If you don't participate in EHCOVE projects for a year or so I may move you to members emeritus section, i.e. label you as inactive. This will also result in the loss of the forum access and remove the increase PM box benefit. You can request to be an active member as soon as you do something for us again and PM me to update your status

8. Bounty etiquette and procedure

If you are interested in doing a bounty, this is how it works:
a. click accept button on the bounty page. PM me (or whoever is the organizer) and post in the linked thread (if any).
b. bounty organizer will click the reserve button reserving your bounty
c. (optional) send early samples for review to the organizer. TL questions can be cross-posted to the Translation Requests section of te forums, Random Translations Questions thread. Editing questions go to the Editor Watercooler thread.
d. send finished project to the bounty organizer. It will get a review/proofread/QC in the EHCOVE forums, this may take several days depending on our backlog (this will be sped up and fast tracked after you have completed several projects for us, and we know we can trust you with quality).
e.(optional) you will be contacted by the proofreader, bounty organizer and/or other EHCOVE editors or translators with advice or questions.
f.After all issues are addressed, the bounty organizer will accept the bounty. If you did a TL bounty, this means a new editign bounty for your project is posted. If it was an editing bounty, the gallery is publicly released. This is the time for you to claim your bounty. The claim will be accepted by the organizer shortly.

In case of any delays, PM the organizer. If they are not me and are not replying, PM me. If I am not relying for several days, something is very wrong - PM other EHCOVE members in seniority order to figure out what's up.

What is expected of a TRANSLATOR

a) quality: you should be proficient enough with Japanese that your scripts are not rewrites. You should also be proficient enough with English that (helped with proofreaders) your scripts can be made sense of. In other words: "Rewrites and broken Engrish craplation will not be accepted."
b) translation should include credit pages (author's rants), but that can be negotiated. Simple credit pages with few words or few sentences should not be a problem. Whether to do handwritten or walls-of-texts pages can be negotiated. Some examples:
** easy to read table of contents: do it (another example)
** few words and an illustration, not part of main story: do it (another example)
** omake, 4-koma, etc. - do it
** short author's rants like an introduction or afterward: do it (another example)
** medium density story: do it (another example)
** medium density author's rant: you can negotiate (another exmple)
** full-blown novel wall-of-text: ignore or negotiate, those things are rare anyway - check the bounty description, maybe it's discussed there already
** heavy density author's rant, or wall-of-text: you can most certainly ignore this or negotiate for a higher bounty
In the end, it's not rocket science. If it's easy few pages, do it. If it looks long and tough, ask and negotiate. If it looks ridiculous, you are probably not required to do it. If in doubt, ask. Also, sometimes we can try to summarize long rants or such.
c) SFXes. Do them. We have guides for them here if you are new. No, it's not important to distinguish between Oh, Ah and such. But others are more interesting, such as "bounce" to "squeak*

How to start a project:
* PM the organizer to make sure it's still open
* accept the bounty
* post in the relevant forum thread (linked from the bounty) that you have done so (if there's a forum for it; not all organizers have them but I for one do - see here)

Once you've done so, the bounty will be reserved for you, however, if the translation is not completed within 2 weeks, it will be considered stalled/dropped and other translators will be allowed to work on it. That's the rough schedule, life happens, some projects are more difficult, we can negotiate extensions - just pretty please PM me (or whoever posted the bounty) that you need more time.

It is good to double check if the link in the bounty is to the highest quality scan available (particularly when you think the res is low and makes it difficult to read the text), rarely but it happens we (I) post a link to inferior scan, or sometimes, a newer, better scan is posted after the bounty is, and I don't see it and therefore won't update the bounty. When downloading the files, make sure to chose the highest quality download, check description - rarely, very high quality scans are too big for the forums (10mb+ per single file), and super high res files are in the torrent only.

You are expected to join our discord channel [discord.gg] https://discord.gg/dASRTgw where you can ask for feedback and generally interact with me and other members and friends of EHCOVE in a much faster way than PMs/forums.

When you are done:
* post the script in the forum (unless the organizer wants to handle it differently; I for one want you do post in the same thread you accepted the bounty in)
* interact with proofreaders/other TLs until we are all happy with the script
* claim your bounty when the editing starts. Editing will start AFTER proofreading is finished. Proofreading may take few days, or up to a week or two. Sorry, we had cases of TL disappearing as soon as the bounty was accepted and ignoring any proofreading queries, so now all new translators have to wait for the proofreading to finish first.

If this is your first TL for EHCOVE and if you have not done many projects before, before proofreading, your script will be reviewed by our member translators, who will check if it is not a rewrite, and possibly offer some other suggestions.

A special note from our most active proofreader:

Translators: When you take on the task of translating a work, you also take on the obligation of finishing it...
To do otherwise is to harm any reputation you may have, or are trying to create...

Your job is to provide as best a translation as you can, and - after due discussion with the proofreader - make any corrections/changes to the script as might be needed to make it as good as you - and the proofreader - can make it

The above means that after proofreading is finished, you are expected to provide an updated, final version of the script incorporating any comments from proofreader or our senior translators.

Q: I think the bounty is too low. Will an organizer be offended if I tell him so?
A: Probably not. Just don't be a dick. Negotiating is fine.

Q: I don't want hath/credits. I have no use for them.
A: You can use them to help the organizer pay editors, or bump up other bounties.

Q: I don't want to work for hath/credits. Can you offer other incentives?
A: Maybe. It depends on the organizer. I, for example, can sometimes buy galleries from English dlsite in exchange.

Q:What is the bounty procedure? When do I claim it, etc.?
A:See section 8 of the first post.

TRANSLATOR rewards

You are included in the credits.

You get paid in hath/bounty/occasional other stuff depending on the organizer.

You have access to EHCOVE subforum and your PM box size is significantly increased.

What is expected of an EDITOR

1. Quality work. If you are new to editing, we have FAQs here. We also have experienced editors who can comment on your progress (read the FAQ). Bottom line: "crappy editing will not be accepted. Crappy is defined as in - people would flame it in the forums, and experienced EHCOVE members would/will complain about it"

2. translated SFXes should be edited in unless they require substantial redrawing, about which we can negotiate. We distinguish the following type of SFXes edit:

Best: Full Replacement. Examples: this page, this entire gallery
2nd best: Nearby + similar formatting this page
Worst sfx: simple notes outside the panels. Examples: this page
No sfx included. Go figure.

What we expect is "2nd best". Many organizers, myself included, are happy to negotiate a higher bounty if you can offer the "best" level of editing (ditto for decensoring).

3. Please make an EHCOVE style credit page, which should the translator name (unless they requested here to be anonymous), yourself as an editor (if you want), ditto for a proofeader and sponsor/organizer nickname (it's also nice to list those of others who contributed to this bounty significantly) as the sponsor(s). The page should also include the name of our site (E-hentai) as the host. Link to the Cove forums is good too, as is a funny cartoon (because I like them). Finally, it's good practice to add a sentence about "This work is intended to be distributed free" or such. Slap a CC logo if you are a free culture fan, that's cool.

5. When you are done:
* post the download link in the forum (unless the organizer wants to handle it differently; I for one want you do post in the same thread you accepted the bounty in so we can discuss quality if needed - most of the times this means this thread or this). Download link should be for a site that is relatively user friendly, as in - no registeration, free, no viruses. Suggested choices commonly used by editors here: mega, mediafire (make sure to zip the file), dropbox, google drive. I don't need the psd files, jpg/png are enough for me. You do not have to password protect it unless you are concerned about privacy (govt/companies spying on your file locker), nobody will steal it from us to ninja post it. If you want to share the zip file with others (through your blog or such), please wait until the gallery is posed in the the e-h system, and when you share it, link ours as well.
* interact with proofreaders/TLs/organizer until we are all happy with the final project
* keep the psd/etc. files for few weeks in case we get some post-posting extra fixes reported

6. You claim your bounty when the gallery is posted in the galleries.

I (or whoever is the primary EHCOVE sponsor/bounty poster) would like to upload the gallery to e-h system themselves; we are not expecting much profit, but as a fellow bounty poster said it, it's all about prestige. What one pays out with the bounty is usually worth more then the gallery will make in the year.

Q: The translator didn't translate a bubble/SFX/something. What should I do?
A: Post in the project thread, PM the translator and the organizer. Wait for the text to come, then finish the project (unless the organizer tells you it wasn't required).

Q: Is decensoring required?
A: No, but it's super cool. Probably worth negotiating an extra bounty (hint!)

Q: How should I handle transparent bubbles?
A: In the same way as SFX/decensoring. Try your best but don't slave away hours on a minor bubble nobody will notice.

What is expected of a PROOFREADER

Wander around the forums/discord and offer proofreading comments

You should have at least a near native command of English, and care about things like comas, periods, capital letters, and such. Knowledge of Japanese is NOT required but of course would help a ton.

How to find scripts for commenting: we currently do not have one centralized place of finding where the scripts are, however the following threads are worth checking:
* we have a dedicated discord channel for proofreading
* Red's thread 1: Looking for a Chinese to English TL
* Red's thread 2: Red's Unumbered Individul Bounties
* Red's thread 3: Red's and ultimaflaral scripts for editing
* EHCOVE organizers: PM me if you want your thread added here

Scripts can be either:
* published (in the galleries). If you comment on those, the older they are, the less likely is we will re-edit them quickly (as it will probably require a new editor bounty). Generally we don't recommend proofreading already published stuff unless you really have nothing else to do / care a lot about that particular gallery and want to see a better v2
* being edited: probably ok, through the editor may grumble occasionally. But then, occasionally, they are also very happy to get help
* not being edited: perfect.

Deadlines: once you start, we hope you can finish proofreading an average script (<50 pages) in two days max. Of course, waiting for the TL to reply etc. may take day(s), so we mean that if you say 'I'll proof this' you'll post v1 of proofing within that period. And hopefully one round is all that's needed.

Q: I want to proofread a script. Do I have to ask someone for permission?
A: Nope. Go for it. Even if someone else has done it/is doing it. The more eyeballs, etc.

Q: So I've proofread a script. Where do I post it?
A: In the same thread you found it. Or in the discord if the TL is active there (most are).

Q: Is there a format for proofreading comments?
Q: Not really.

PROOFREADER rewards

You will be on the credit pages (unless you don't want to).

Some regular translators for whom you proofread the script may be more open to translating something for you for free as a favor every now and then, but I cannot speak for them.

Unlike editing and translating, proofreading is seen as a much easier job, so it is rarely supported by dedicated credits/hath bounties per projects. However, individual organizers may offer incentives for you to work on their projects.

Red's rewards for proofreaders:
* for each 10 scripts you proofread, you can apply in the EHCOVE discussion thread (until I am bothered to create dedicated thread) for a reward of either a) 500k credits + 500 hath bounty (which is enough to cover an editing job, for example, or create an average-size translation bounty) o a work from English dlsite that is worth <5$ which I will buy for you within a month (I'll send you the archive which you should share, if possible, in the galleries)

What is expected of an ORGANIZER

An ORGANIZER is a person who chooses what to translate, and gets a translator, editor and (usually) a proofreader to do it. This can, but does not have to be done through the bounty system.

EHCOVE organizer requirements:
* maintain a decent quality of your releases (you should require that your translators and editors stick to guidelines above). An organizer whose galleries are commonly criticized for crappy English / editing / etc. will be asked to leave EHCOVE
* your releases should include an EHCOVE credit page (as described in the "what is expected of an EDITOR section"

ORGANIZER rewards

You get to upload the galleries for the crappy GP income they generate.

You get to write what you want in the gallery description.

You will probably be on the credit page (unless you don't want to).

You get to choose what gets translated. If you can afford to pay / motivate EDITORS/TRANSLATORS somehow.

Newbies may think you are important.
