We have an "ask a question and seek help" threads for translators and scanners, but nothing for editors. This thread is aiming to correct this oversight. Have a question about editing that is not answered in our FAQs? Or perhaps you just want to show a page or two and ask for comments? Do it here. Enjoy,

Is that a request or advice? Because we already have a request thread, and I think this thread is meant only for discussing and seeking advice on editing(?). Speaking of which, would the "Editor's Wanted" thread sound better if it were renamed to something like "Random/Requesting Editing Help".

Advice
I'm looking for a way to redo the pattern without doing line by line or cloning.. if there is any. Same with bubbles like [puu.sh] these.

The worst part of editing is that I can no longer enjoy things without noticing and cringing at poor typesetting choices and shitty redraws.

Oh god, I thought I was the only one that felt like that. One of the reasons I never post editing bounties is because my absurd standards on quality. Sometimes when I look back on my older stuff, I think "Gah! did I really do that?" (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

Yesterday I saw this editing bounty and I've never worked on a RAW manga page but I thought about giving it a try.
What can I do to make it look better?

I know there is already someone working on it but I'm going to finish it anyways as practice (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

I need some advice with leveling. I'm probably going to be commissioned to do this, but I can't seem to get the leveling right because the shoddy scanning. I'm starting to think it'd be easier just to blot out the text and be done with it.

I'm probably pointing out what you're already aware of but it would be infinitely easier to just do the typesetting. That raw is horrendous.
Massive bleeding, gutter shadow, blurred in some places, the pages are darker at the bottom and corners. Using only levels to fix all that would be extremely hard.

After filtering, global leveling, more filtering, segmented leveling, more segmented leveling, manual dodge of the gutter shadow + cloning, warp to make the lower panel straight, a detail recovery process(that included more segmented leveling) and a minor texture replacement. This was the result:
Attached Image

I still could do: even more segmented leveling, replace/recover the screentone behind that pony in the second panel, recover even more small details that were lost by taking out the bleeding, warp/straighten the 1st panel, fix some lines of the gutter shadow, and etc etc...

So... a very extensive hardcore process to make just 1 page look decent (probably further pages will requiere even more steps.) against the option of just typesetting it.
You can save a ton of time doing the typesetting alone. Honestly the average reader mostly just cares about being able to read it in their language above anything else.

I had a feeling it was going to end up that way, and you're definitely right. So be it then.

Why there's no unspoken rules about scanning standards, I'll never know; someone is always so quick to shoot down a bad translation, but shit editing and scanning seems to get a free pass.

When using Photoshop, there are two key shortcuts that I use almost all the time when editing. It's:
*hold down spacebar to change to move tool (so I can quickly scroll around the page I'm working for any other editing tasks to do or quick QC)
* ctrl+= and ctrl+- to zoom in and out the image respectively (ctrl+0 is useful as well for quick scale to fit on screen)

Now, the question is, what are the equivalent for GIMP?

The + and - on the numpad scroll in and out without needing the ctrl key. The - and = keys sorta work as well, but you need to hold down shift to zoom in, and to not hold down shift to zoom out, so it's kinda awkward. You can also do ctrl+scrollwheel. ctrl-shift-j to scale image to fit window.

[docs.gimp.org] http://docs.gimp.org/en/gimp-view-zoom.html

No idea about the move tool.
