I loved Agata Christie's books when I was a kid. I'm not doing much reading these days so I can't give much recommendations on "modern" books.

i second DearGoddess' suggestion - Christie has some classics if you've not tried them + she had an interesting mental breakdown which enhances the experience of reading. you must flirt with mental unwellness to a certain degree with intriguing literature, no? something, er, a cliché quote... „Man muss noch Chaos in sich haben, um einen tanzenden Stern gebären zu können.“ ("One must still have chaos within oneself, to give birth to a dancing star")

A while back I read "Who Censored Roger Rabbit", the novel the film "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" was based on.
It's a very clever and extremely unique mystery novel. When I found out the secret behind the mystery, I was completely shocked.

If you like reading mystery visual novels, Higurashi no Naku Koro ni is a fantastic one.

Sythe by Neal Shusterman was recommeded to me a while back, bought it and still have not read it. I should probably get around to it. Seems very interesting
