Quickie note for those new lines, if you're able to with GIMP, give them an outer glow because it will soften their edges up so you can use a thin line as the base, doing that will reduce their sharp/blocky pixels and make them look more natural looking.

Okay, let's post some of our newly acquired editing skills. I would suggest a new thread for that to reduce clutter in this thread, but whatever works best.

How about everyone doing a couple pages of the same stuff, each page having something different that needs to be done.

Like for example...
Page 1: Only needs cleaning, normal text.
Page 2: Need special tools for cleaning, normal text, smaller text for outside of bubbles.
Page 3: Requires old text to be edited out of picture followed by newer text to have outer glow.
Page 4: The one above.

I think that's a good way to show off what you've learned.

Ahhh, Rookie...

I saw the K-On page Shanko posted about editing out the text from background. I'd thought the pic was nice, so I saved it and then couple of days later I got bored (after having done a similiar effort of removing text from colored backgrounds - which was harder than black & white, I tell you) of having nothing else to do and decided to see if I could do same thing to the pic for heck of it. 30 minutes later, I'd already removed most of text and fixed it up so nicely using massive amounts of cloning and marquee duplication. The last few text on bed and pillow took me another 15 min though.



(ignore the black line at bottom, I forgot to crop the pic slightly, but that wasn't the task I had to do here )

Then I find out that you already did the guide with almost exact same results as I had. Admittedly, I never thought about using pen method though; I used more brute method of using marquee tool to select whatever lines remained and then duplicating them to make continious lines to close the gaps. It works, although I see that some lines are bit rough around the bed and pillow area, but that should be easily covered up with text.

Although I can't seem to figure out how to adjust the white & black points inside Photoshop (I usually have to manually adjust the levels until I get black areas I want to be black to be 0, white areas to be 255, or adjust bright & contrast (but I don't like this method as I can lose some detail this way). If someone can tell me how to correct white/black in PS, let me know thanks!

Oh, and a side note: where'd that page come from anyway? I thought it was from manga, because the art was so clean, but I remembered that the manga was actually 4-panel koma so it's probably a doujin of some sort. And again, for some reason I have a feeling that I've seen that art style before too, but can't quite put it.

Excellent job, bonus points for doing it without seeing the guide. About the pic, it was just something I found by accident someone translated, but instead of repairing it like that they simply white-outed it.

Haha, yeah, I totally overlooked the black line on the bottom of the page too. A bit embarrassing when I said the image didn't need cropping, but I had already finished the post and didn't want to reupload all the images for such a small detail.

Good job with the editing; I've never actually tried the marquee method since I've always found cloning and redrawing to be sufficient. If you want to add a post detailing how to use the marquee method, you're more than welcome to.

I don't have PS, so I can't help you with your white point/black point problem. Super Shanko? Any ideas?

Hmm.... You got me there. I never adjust leveling so i'm not familiar with it.

Adjusting black/whites is what leveling basically does - go with what looks good to you.

The example pictures of what is well leveled and what is overleveled seem to show very few differences in that tutorial - then again, people don't even care about stellar hackjobbery such as this splendid piece of art.

That's one of the many things I've realized since I started translating - people don't care as much as you think they do. Next to nobody has an 'eye' to what quality work really looks like, so in the end, you only go the extra mile for a small audience. It's worth it though, but ultimately, you gotta be happy with what your projects look like.

Sometimes I think people are happy with any random combination of words, as long as they're English words, and the most productive "translators" know and exploit it to hell and back. I don't really have any other explanation for this.

That's probably also why there's a demand for rewrites; people want some sort of story to go along with the pictures, even if it's not the real thing.

Haha, I've seen you ragging on him in that other thread. Well yeah... it's nothing new that he most likely needs a proofreader or anything, but word is, he's too proud for his own good when it comes to that.

I read some interesting research once which showed that some people think they're quite awesome at something even though in fact they're quite bad at it; too bad to realize that they are, in fact, not geniuses. Sadly, this prevents these people from ever improving; they can't see any reason or way to improve what they perceive as near perfect, and other people's criticism is ignored because those other people are obviously not skilled enough to recognize perfection when they see it.

Sounds like a certain fellow fits that description perfectly.

Make sure that the text layout is both functional Nd aesthetically pleasing. The general idea for most bubbles is to match the basic shape, having the text do something like this:

Also, where you break up your long words with hyphens is important. Preferably, you would insert the hyphen between an emphasized syllable and one less so.

I've asked myself the same question often enough; the world would be a better place if people would just say "you know, this sucks" rather than "ooh, there are words - and they're in the ROMAN ALPHABET! - this is awesome." At least I look back at stuff I translated a year ago or two and say to myself "you know, you should be ashamed this shit made its way onto the internets." At least, that way I know I'm still improving.

I don't know; he's apparently pulled his translation of Cherry Pie from the galleries; why would he have done that if not because he was informed that it's woefully inaccurate? But I guess you could be right; it's not polite to tell someone "your translation is bad" so I guess nobody will tell him directly.

That is a very important tip, until recent I never noticed it until someone pointed it out to me. And now I can never unsee it in my previous stuff.

Well, that was pretty much basic. You never see that kind of thing in comics.

I was referring to the following quote, when I was asking for some examples, so sorry for not being clear. ;

Oh, what it pretty much means is when/if you decide to do a hyphen, put it somewhere where the syllable breaks the word, like when you're grade school teacher had you break the word while using your finger to count to.

Like if the word has four syllables like.... "Compensated", you'd want to break it in the middle like this--->
"Compen-
sated"(it's not coming out right because the way is shows on the page, but pretty much like that)
