Images uploaded to e-hentai are often large in dimensions and large in file-size as well.

Whilst dimensions can easily be modified by anyone with an image-viewing program, filesize is a whole different matter.

Let's take these 2 images for example:

There's a site called www.smushit.com
This site has an online tool which allows you compress the file-size images. This means that the dimensions are not modified. Here's a result:

As you can see, the filesize has dropped, whilst the dimensions and quality remain the same. I can't show proof of that, you'll have to run the tests yourself. Even animated gif files have their filesize reduced, without losing the animation.

The sad thing about smushit.com is that you can't upload files anymore.

Another site doing this, is [www.gracepointafterfive.com] http://www.gracepointafterfive.com/punypng
Which is aimed more at PNG files, but does other formats aswell. Beware not to send animated gif files. This service does not keep the animation intact.

For this one, you can upload, but not give links to parse. The savings are similar.

There is also software that does this. Some of it has licenses, other you can find on sourceforge.



Some images and galleries however, are grosly oversized. For instance, this one: http://ehentaihip.com/g/150233/3cce561254/

This gallery contains exactly 2000 images and if asked for a zip via the Doggie Bag Archiver, it's 361MB in size.
I downloaded it, unzipped it, and had an optimizer run over it(there's a limit of 1000 files per compression cycle, so I had to do it in 2 seperate cycles). Then I zipped it up again. Resulting filesize being 142MB. That's more than 200MB less.


I want to ask: does e-hentai compress the images that are uploaded, in any way whatsoever.

Now, compression takes time. More images means it'll take longer. The current system of uploading is really fast to show results, so I'm guessing there's no compression involved here.


I'm just asking this, because if would mean smaller downloads and lesser download-times for the end-user.
For e-hentai itself, it would mean:

1. Less disk-space taken
2. Smaller galleries to zip for the Doggie Bags -> Takes less time and reduced CPU load
3. Smaller zip files to send to the users -> less bandwidth used

And probably some other things.


So, what is the current situation regarding the minimization of filesize on e-hentai?
