just tried the alt url, but i noticed that my monsterbation settings have been reset to default there, any way to carry over without doing the changes manually?

Go back to the original URL. Open MB setting.
Click"Dump" and copy everything.
Go back to alt URL. Open MB setting.
Click "Dump". Replace everything with paste.

is there an ideal level to keep a monster at, so it gets more encounters with players? or should it be leveled as high as possible?

Keep them low level, level 25, and then give priority to opening new monster slots. Only when you have them all, then you could consider leveling them up. LV 750 is nice, then they still use the cheaper food but also start bringing better drops. After that, I guess level 1300+ or so is needed before they actually get some battle time more often. Maybe even higher nowadays. That does not have a short pay-back time. Not at all. Only interesting in the looooong term.
