Hello scanlators, I figure we'd need a thread for font recommendations, identifications, critiques, etc. for our scanlation projects. So here it is! As a start I'd like to have a recommendation for fonts for this doujin that I'm currently translating + editing on: Fonts required are for one lovey-dovey demure princess type character and a princely young admiral character. The fonts in the pic above are picked by myself, I felt they're kinda okay, but I'd appreciate recommendations! Fonts used: KG Love Somebody Regular & Borders Divide, But Hearts Shall Conquer Regular

QUOTE(Ser Maggot @ Jul 12 2016, 04:24) I recommend using CC Monologous, CC Chatterbox or even CC Samaritan, they all have accents. Just... not Comic Sans.
You have a link for those?

[ imgur.com] http://imgur.com/a/8nhC5The second and fourth ones--which look the same--look like "Borders Divide, But Hearts Shall Conquer". If you got that from a 5 a.m. release, then I'm 100% certain. The third one may be handwritten.

I believe it's Wurper, but that sample is so freaking small for my poor eyes I'm not entirely sure... [ www.fontspace.com] http://www.fontspace.com/joberto/wurper-regular

Am I the only person who thinks it is hilarious that people use special computer fonts for anything other than extremely unusual situations when all of our computers come with literally hundreds of normal computer fonts? Fonts like Arial, Calibri, Helvetica, and Times New Roman are absolutely acceptable if not the most desirable because those are all fonts that are all actually used in real life on computers.

You're not really serious, are you? What's "used in real life on computers" just isn't what's used in comics.... either in fan scanlations or in legitimate, commercial works. Just take a look at the comics in your morning paper and see whether any of those fonts are being used in them.......and yes, in this respect, comics are comics. Whether it be a four-panel daily or a 200 page "graphic novel", those kinds of basic, "book report" fonts just aren't used (overall) in this very specialized medium.

Honestly. Fonts are used for visual purposes whether it's a fancy advertisement, a comic or plain like this.

I was talking about situations like this: ehentaihip.com/s/f0bf0fed74/546486-24Yes, you could dig up some special font that looks computery, or you could just use a font that you'd actually see in real life on a phone or other computer screen. I'd argue the latter is fundamentally a better choice due to corresponding to reality, readability, and effort on the part of the editor. If you care to reinvent the wheel, that's your prerogative. You know, I have to say reading your first statement and the context of what you actually meant by it makes me want to slap both you for not being clearer and myself for jumping the gun.

I will concede that I could have been clearer, but the word computer was used 4 times in my post. Why would I be talking about what fonts are used in real life on computers when discussing typesetting dialog? I'd also posit that computer fonts is probably the correct way to describe it. I'd break fonts in regards to editing down into: Dialog fonts Distressed speech fonts (e.g. moans/yells) SFX fonts Visual fonts (e.g. hearts, stars) Handwritten fonts Computer fonts (e.g. computer screens, phones, printed materials) This post has been edited by traficantj: Aug 6 2016, 08:13

I understand. I mostly use Veggie Burger for that sleek/readable screen font.

Heh.....well, I can't say I wasn't kinda wondering, but yeah, what you meant and what you actually said weren't really the same things (at least the way it read to me) Oh well, no biggie.... And yeah, I use Times here and there, seems like I actually used Arial in some weird little spot just the other day.....so yeah, I agree with you, it all depends on where you are/what exactly it is/precedent/what have you, they don't all need something fancy This post has been edited by svines85: Aug 6 2016, 09:18

I thought it was completely clear what he meant and figured he was talking about computer screens within comics when I first read his post...
