The way in which western vs. non-western works are determined is currently under debate by the administration. Thus we are opening up the discussion with the community on how to best approach this matter. Both of the proposed approaches have their pros and cons.
Option A (the current method): The artist's country of origin (e.g. Japan, China, Korea, etc. results in an Asian designation). + Objective; there is no ambiguity + Can default to Option B if an artist's information cannot be located - Not intuitive
Option B: The "style" of the artwork (e.g. manga-esque drawing results in an Asian designation). + Intuitive - Can be very subjective (some artists blur between styles or make poor imitations) - Difficult to explain to those not familiar with styles - Will require a lot of reclassification
Note that this is NOT a vote; please only make posts that add to the conversation. Also feel free to speak up about any alternative approaches.
